From 1995 to 1998, she served as a scientific advisor to the Office of Research on Women’s Health at the NIH, a role that earned her a Service Award in 2000. She was appointed Professor Emerita of Clinical Medicine in 1998, honoring a career dedicated to medical innovation and excellence.
In 1993, Dr. Legato founded the Partnership for Women’s Health at Columbia University, which evolved into the Foundation for Gender-Specific Medicine in 2006. Through this foundation, she has championed public awareness and supported emerging research in gender-specific medicine, fostering a better understanding of the unique health needs of men and women.
Her achievements have earned her numerous accolades, including an honorary doctorate from the University of Panama in 2015 for her pioneering contributions to gender-specific medicine. Currently, Dr. Legato continues to share her expertise as an adjunct professor of medicine at Johns Hopkins University.
